PyeongChang Pictograms Concept / 2017

Pictograms about facilities and services of Pyeongchang 2018.

The Olympic Look design is the most important symbol that determines the atmosphere of the Olympic Games. Hangul was selected as the look design material of the PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games. It is the first look design made with letters in Olympic history. By separating and recombining Korean consonants and vowels with excellent formability, a system was developed that emphasizes the formative beauty that people around the world sympathize with.

Problem Space

The total number of stadiums in the Pyeongchang Olympic Games is 1200. In this massive number of stadiums and Olympic Square, there are facilities and services to accommodate the people from all over the world, including children, women and the elderly, in line with the spirit of the Olympics.

So I decided to produce pictograms about facilities and services of the Pyeongchang 2018 Olympic Games that can be clearly meaningful and communicate well with existing brand design.

Harmony with Look design

The first principle of the pictograms is to use the same stick motif and maintain the line, grid and ratio of Olympic emblem, and keep the empty space of the emblem in the pictogram. And I use the five colors of the emblem – red, blue, yellow, green, and black – and its variations to help the pictograms look harmonious when they are placed with Olympic emblem. Each pictogram has a rule for describing its meanings at the bottom for universality.

There are various worldwide sponsors in the Olympics.  I thought about transforming the existing logos for Pyeongchang Olympic marketing
and using it in media advertisements and Olympic Square during the Olympics.
